Response to Ayatollah Khamenei’s Appeal

Ayatollah Khamenei has appealed to the youth in western countries to help create the grounds for finding solutions to the problem of terrorism through mutual consultation. He rightly points to facts little publicized in the west, such as the long-time suffering inflicted on the people of Islam, and the role of the United States of America in helping to create and arm al-Qaeda.

These are facts which need to be publicized in the West, as does the Ayatollah’s encouragement of a mutual solution to the problem of terrorism.

Unfortunately it is difficult to endorse a statement which, when discussing the tragic situation in Palestine, refers only to the sufferings inflicted on the Palestinian people, and does not also recognize those inflicted on the Israeli people. Although the violence may be disproportionate on one side, one cannot hope for a diminution by focusing on that side alone.

That tragedy of violence will not end until we acknowledge and seek a solution to the violence on all sides. That will also require all those major powers involved, including both the United States and Iran, to modify their behavior.

Let us all agree that the first step to achieving this is through mutual consultation.
